CHAPTER 15

Aidan contacted Chaegar sooner than he expected and, from the angry look on the young man's face, he didn't have good news.

"What have you got for me?" Chaegar asked.

"I have a last recorded location for Dorcas' phone," Aidan said. "It matches the location tag on one of the pictures she received as a message. If the information I have on the location is correct, it's on her family's farm."

"That follows with everything else I've got," Chaegar said. "What aren't you telling me?"

"I can't find the location of the phone that sent them. And I should be able to because there was data left on the photos."

"Is that something we can fix?"

Aidan shook his head. "No, I recognize what they're doing to hide the information. It's designed to never get you to the right answer but lead you far enough along with false positives that they can track you and interfere with your system."

"Well, that's terrifying," Chaegar said.

"Yeah, and she forwarded the messages to a different number. One that's hidden behind a bunch of screens but belongs to a, um, not sure what to call it. A group of people who help other people in a bad situation. If they tried to trace the information, they've been compromised."

"Can we fix it?"

"I don't know," Aidan said. "I should be able to baffle it but they've warped my code and I don't-"

"Your code?" Chaegar asked. "What do you mean your code?"

The young man looked uncomfortable. "Uh, I might have written the base programming they're using to do this. I used it to some effect to get information out of, um, look, it's not important, alright? Except someone caught enough of what I was doing to be able to replicate it and change it enough that I don't recognize it and I don't have a clean system set up to try and take it apart."

"Can you contact the people who are on the other end of the line to let them know they've been compromised?" Chaegar asked. "And get with Alvola to see what you can do about figuring out what they did?"

"Already sent them a message. I have no idea if they've seen it or if whoever is in their system has enough control to get rid of it before they do. And I'm still working out who they are and how they work. They're pretty good at this for a bunch of humans."

Chaegar shook his head. "Alright, send me what you've got. Do you know anybody in the area who can go check on her? I'm going to find a way to get down there and find her."

"My mom has some friends in the area," Aidan said. "I'll call them for a well check."

His wrist comm lit up with the information Aidan sent him and he started feeding it into the shuttle's computer. He'd included surveillance videos of the area and all the public information about the farm and the area around it.

"Alright, you do that. I'm going to start putting together a flight plan.
